Name: William Lawedre
Source: Original
Appearance: A visual reference for my little charmer. William is about 5'11", of average build, and not terribly muscular. He exercises enough to keep himself healthy and toned, but is not what most would consider physically "strong." He has a slightly unkempt mop of blonde hair atop his head, which has a natural deep wave to it. At the ends, it tends to curl. His eyes are blue. His posture is, unlike that of most people his age, pretty impeccable. He walks with his shoulders pushed back, and his pace is easy. He's not one to look rushed very often, as he gives off a laid-back feel from the way his hands are often in his pockets, his chin is tipped up, and the way he sometimes scuffs his heels. He wears a simple, black fedora atop his head most of the time. He tends to dress business casual no matter where he goes, as he just favours slacks and button down shirts over most styles. He owns quite a few suits, ties, and opts for more professional than anything. His more notable features would likely be his jawline, as it is a strong one. He has a bit of a baby face for his age, and looks a bit young. He tries to consistently stay clean-shaven. (Beard? No thank you.)

Personality: His profile reads as such: "He rarely walks without his most beloved fedora and a pack of Capstans. He has a noticeably peppy gait to his walk and cannot seem to control the dartings of his tongue. He is honest, and expects truth in return. He is mutable and persuaded fairly easily, though he is not without sense. He simply enjoys the indulgences that trouble brings. He is stubborn with his beliefs, easily flustered when it comes to teasing his tendencies, and bears a smile that does not belong on his face. His grin always hides something, yet his features paint his emotions like a pumping heart pinned to a sleeve.

He is curious, and challenging. Competitive. Yet there is something inherently doting about his nature. He is a keen student and a golden pup of youth, well dressed and socially flitting about as he sees fit. He keeps multiple companies. He was raised by two families. Both his own mother and father and the father of his most beloved childhood companion saw to his growth. His life is one of balancing the multitudes of worlds he keeps rotating about. He is a fair and a just person, a son for his father to be proud of. His obedient and has his honour, though he does not abide all the rules he is bound by.

He has no face for cards, and his weakness lies in his tells, but he's got the aim for billiards. He enjoys a gentleman's club and the privilege he was born into. He drinks gin martinis to the specifications of the very first one he was ever given. His introduction to liquor caused him to hardly stray from what he knew to be good... and who very well introduced him to it.

He likes to play games, though he typically loses them. He rarely minds."

At first glance, William seems to be nothing more than a simplistic young man, a remnant from the 'old boy' days where men operated by simple rules to remain gentlemanly, charming, and professionally cut off from most things. While he does, in many ways, retain some of those attributes, he is not so high strung nor completely traditional. He is, very much, his father's son. However, his greatest strengths are some of those that separate him from his father.

A largely dominant part of William’s life is the fact that he is a law student at Cambridge, a university that is one of the oldest and top universities in the world. Contrary to most people at his age, William knows exactly where he wants to be within the next five and ten years. After earning his law degree, William wants to begin as a barrister, establish himself, and eventually work his way into politics. That being said... he has a long way ahead of him. Still, lofty and ambitious goals such as these make for a highly driven young man. He’s dedicated to his studies, and not a procrastinator. He tackles his tasks as he receives them, and one of the last people you’d see in the computer lab the night before a paper is due, jamming out the whole thing. You might see him there... but fine tuning the last-minute thoughts and details he’s been planning out since the day the paper was assigned. He’s not the brightest man in his classes; that would surely be a rather large boast. He is not, however, the most inept of his schoolfellows. He earned his way into becoming a student at Cambridge by his own intellectual capability and demonstration of that on the exams. He is not above having to work for his accomplishments. That being said, however, he also is not above shmoozing his fellow classmates and professors. After all, one never knows who might become a good friend to have professionally one day! Personal relationships are important to him, and that extends just as well into his academic settings. He wants to be able to consult his professors for help, should he need it, ask them for potential letters of recommendation one day, ask their advice once in the job world, etc. As for his schoolfellows, his own graduating class will be his future contemporaries. He’s practical enough to see any friendships he makes here as not only a social pleasure, but potentially a way to make strong connections that will help him later.

That isn’t to say he objectifies all the people in his life. If anything, William just values them all the more. He doesn’t see friends as a mere emotional safety net or company when there is free time allotted to him. These people are souls he wants to keep around for a long time. He enjoys them, prizes them. He has all their backs, and puts faith enough in them that they will have his, should he need it. If anything, William has a little too much faith in humanity.

While one of his crowning attributes, William’s bright-eyed trust in what goodness people possess is also one of his weaknesses. He has--while a bit more practical than those of the comic book variety--a desire for heroics. He’s highly protective, he believes very deeply in justice, and one of his greatest desires is to see the worse parts of his country take a turn for the better... and be a part of that change. Being a barrister would offer him the chance to see that justice is carried out, and protect those who were victims before. Politics would offer him the opportunity to really put into motion particular changes he wants. All of these stem from that sort of glassy-eyed idealism. It’s a trait he’s not likely to shake unless things go terribly wrong for him or, in the span of years after he has a steady job, he becomes disenchanted with corruption in either system.

Not many things threaten to ruin William, should his labours toward becoming a politician one day come to fruition. Yet one of his greatest weaknesses is how deeply he cares. Should a woman bat her eyelashes just right, he might throw everything away for her. He falls in love quickly, and once in love, finds it hard to shake himself of the feeling... even if he wants to. By nature, he is a highly loyal person, and so in love, he is just as devoted. In that same manner, he is also protective. In relationships with women, William proves to be fastidious in his determination to stick by his girlfriends, regardless of their situations. If he feels they need to be protected, he’ll offer himself up for the task, regardless of whether or not they want it. He doesn’t pose much against most of the world’s threats, but he tries to. To him, it’s not that he can physically stave off the evils of the world. It’s more a matter of honor and keeping to his word.

One word that describes William very well is “gentlemanly.” Many of his charms are a bit on the cheesy side, but he can easily boast that he is a bit old fashioned. He isn’t vulgar, and his cursing is minimal. He opens doors for women, offers his arm, gives them his jacket when they’re cold. Little things that seem to have gone out of style... but to him come naturally. William is, without a doubt, charming. There is nothing he is more prone to than doling out flattery. In one occasion, a girl (whose character I do not own) asked “doesn’t it bother you to be so charming?” William laughed, insisting that it works too well. “I’m not a liar, but people often like it when I tell them pretty truths.” He meant it.

Still, even naturally suave men have their habits, tics, and quirks. William is a creature of habit, as most people tend to be. His habits, like most of the human population, are a combination of nervous ticks and personal preferences, while a few of them are productive and help to organize his life. He has a few noticeable tics when he tends to get nervous, most often around close friends that can get under his skin. His hands fidget, something he tries to control by jamming them in his pockets. The other physical habit he sports is subconscious; he licks his lips often. This tic, however, can be indicative of several things. Intense focus, sexual excitement, nervousness, or insecurity. Most often, it is one of the latter three. For an indulgence, William smokes a particular brand of cigarettes: Capstans. He isn’t, however, a chainsmoker. He is, what most people would call, a social smoker. His cigarettes are, most often, paired with drinking. His drinking habits are, just as well, quite mild. While he does attend some parties, he is not a partygoer. He far prefers the quiet bar, and the ‘old boy’ feel of a good gentleman’s club. (A gentleman’s club meaning: a members-only private club that historically only allowed the entrance of high-class men. One example is the Oxford and Cambridge Club in London, designed to be a “home away from home” for the two universities’ graduates.)

Other quirks of his include his penchant for alphabetising things (such as books, films he has on dvd, music albums, and school files), going nowhere without a watch, and operating on military time (the 24 hour clock) when at home. Most of those are habits ingrained into him as a child due to his father’s parenting style, one that incorporated years of military habits.

William prefers intimate settings--regardless of whether with friends or dates--to loud throngs. He is a physically intimate person as well; he is affectionate with all of his relationships. Most noticeably, he is handsy with his best friend, Richard Hart. It is not out of desire that he acts this way (though some could probably argue that desire is highly motivational for it), but is a natural way they have with one another. He is a romantic creature. He enjoys surprises, and giving them even more so.

His role amongst friends and social circles is quite different. William is the sort of fellow in school who doesn’t outright belong to any of the extracurricular groups, but is seen with all of them. One might even mistakenly presume him to be a member. He is the honourary member in the social scenes of the athletes, the musicians, the artists, the writers, the theatregoers and social activists. He has close friends who are on the rowing team, who are on the university debate team, who are in bands that play in the bars at night, who are journalists in the university’s publications, and who are constantly advocating for something. William is a mutable but adaptable man. He has his morals and his beliefs, but he, as a person, can shift and change. He plays piano with the musicians. He plays devil’s advocate and gets argumentative with the activists and debaters. He attends all the rowing events, suggests materials to the journalists, and joins some of the rallies he feels he can truly rally behind. He isn’t particularly talented at any one of these things, but exists as a floater.

He is a social butterfly, one who actively enjoys getting into friendly spats for the thrill of argument. He doesn’t believe in “agreeing to disagree.” It’s a band-aid for larger issues at hand, and it’s a temporary clog on something that often needs such heated talking over. He naturally has a head for politics, in this way. He is also, oftentimes, the neutral set of eyes that looks objectively at two sides of any given situation. He is choosy with his words, though he is more long-winded than most men. He is unafraid of commitment.

At his worst, he lets his emotions get the best of him. His desires to protect others cause him unhappiness, which he is willing to endure should it even potentially bar something worse from happening or another from experiencing pain. He is unsure, and his stubbornness can get in his way. He internalises his struggles, and leans towards pathetic. He drinks a little more, and with enough in his system, becomes confessional and spontaneous. Liquor can be a truth serum with William, and he puts all of his emotions on his sleeve for the world to see... accidentally. He states things as they are, and becomes defensive.

William is not, however, hot-headed. He is easygoing, keen on enjoying the pleasures in life, looking forward to reaping the rewards of working hard. He avoids emotional confrontations, but is generally unafraid of a challenge. What he fears is losing those he cares about. This flaw may seem ordinary, and it is. It is also something that can botch the actions of even the most even-tempered and level-headed individuals. Fears can make even the brightest and most confident men nervous. William is a bit... susceptible to the effects of his own fears. He cares deeply. He takes failures personally. He isn’t above crying, though it’s doubtful many witness his tears. He is proud. He is, as many of us are, his own worst enemy.

History: In a separate emtry, due to length.
Specific Abilities: While William, being human and of average build, does not possess any supernatural or particularly impressive abilities, his strengths most certainly lie in his knack for politics and his reputation for being a charmer. He studies law, and has a natural knack for reading the fine print and understanding how social games and negotiations work. His biggest disadvantage is his strength. He may exercise regularly, but there's a running joke with Richard that anyone could beat him up.
Inventory: William will have his satchel he uses to carry things on campus slung over his shoulder. Inside will be textbooks, pens, a notebook filled with notes from lectures, breath mints, a pack of Capstan cigarettes, and his old-style lighter (refillable with oil) that was a gift from his Uncle George. Atop his head will be his fedora, a hat that looks slightly ridiculous on him but he doesn't go outside without. In one pocket will be his wallet with his Citizen Card, a driver's license, a photograph, a credit card and a few pounds. His other pocket carries his mobile phone.

Journal Sample: [A voice comes over the communicator, one that is a little bit posh and very noticeably English. It begins with a deep sigh, one that hints at annoyance and a hidden resignation. When William speaks, however, the words come out with a nonchalance that insists he is trying to be good-humoured about the whole thing.]

I think it's safe to say that our living here, the day to day, is a gamble. I'm one of the unfortunate sods around here who really doesn't know much about all this... magical business, but that doesn't make me unwilling to find out, or learn. I'll be the first to admit that, as much as I am baffled--and admittedly a little horrified--I'm curious. Curious enough to be stupid, I suppose. It really wasn't the brightest thing, reaching into the water toward one of them, but hell! You can't tell me they aren't pretty.

Oh, of bloody course, they're pretty. They're dangerous! They wouldn't be, say, as eerie or intimidating if they weren't beautiful. She was, that one in the water, right up until I nearly froze to death. [A puff of air.] Christ.

[A small pause as he collects his thoughts. Where was he going with this?]

Ah, right. The point. I'm not entirely sure I had one other than, "Don't touch the fae, it's just a tad on the stupid side," but you could just as well call my babble commentary. I'm just convinced this is a crapshoot. Who is to say why we're here, or what's going to happen? A gamble, a roll of the dice, a hand of cards. That's what we are. I think we all know we're a game to them. I'm just pissed off they aren't sporting enough to at least tell me my odds.

[He laughs at his own grim joke, then adds sourly:]

Five Euros says they're betting on us.
